NOTES:

This was my third time seeing King Gizzard. The first two times also came at Coachella back in 2017, when they also played on the Outdoor Theatre, but in the hot afternoon rather than at midnight. I must say, when I saw the set times get announced and saw that King Gizzard was closing the Outdoor Theatre at midnight, I couldn't have been happier. I had no desire to go watch Harry Styles, so being able to end the night with King Gizzard was pretty much the perfect scenario. Thank you Coachella set times God!

There's been some rumors that the band hated the slot, and/or that they were supposed to play in the Mojave Tent earlier in the day before Arcade Fire took that slot with their surprise performance. I don't personally believe any of that, and I don't think a 6:45pm slot in the Mojave would have been any better for the band. I think midnight on the Outdoor was perfect and was probably the plan all along. But who knows.

If the band was unhappy, it was more likely due to the fact that apparently their in-ear monitors were picking up Harry Styles's sound from over on the main stage. They (the band) mentioned this a few times while they were sound checking/setting up. I suppose while you're gearing up to play "Gamma Knife'' and all you hear is "Watermelon Sugar" coming over your feed, it would be a bit frustrating. Regardless, the band said "fuck it" and powered on. And powered on they did, because they immediately opened their set with one of my favorite songs, and one I remember hearing for the first time all the way back at their initial 2017 set, "Rattlesnake". But it wasn't just any ol' Rattlesnake rendition. No sir. This was a fucking 15 minute+ rendition of "Rattlesnake"! I swear, it was like the fucking pink Energizer bunny, it just kept going and going and going. Just when you thought they were at the end of the song, another chorus would kick in, and out came those words "Rattlesnake, rattlesnake, rattlesnake....rattlesnake". Over and over again (to quote IDLES). It was splendid! If you're looking for the best and most awesome version of Rattlesnake ever, look no further!

The rest of the set was great too. Honey was sweet. Self Immolate was fucking unreal. And ending with both Gaia and Gamma Knife? Classic King Gizzard! So much packed and crammed into a 50 minute set that was over way too soon. I can only imagine what it must be like to catch a 2-3 hour set from these guys. Like a trip to another planet...
